The product of a dissertation defended by Jailton Lima Brito in completion of his master’s degree in History at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBa), A Abolição na Bahia 1870-1888 was published in 2003. Using primary and bibliographic research, the author analyzes the abolitionist ideas and practices and the changes in the social relations resulting from the end of slavery.
Brito recognizes the importance of the slaves’ participation, opposing the thesis that abolition would not have had a bigger impact in Bahia due to the decadence of the sugarcane culture.
