Cultural ContributionsCities and Regions

Those who travel the world came face-to-face with its contrasting beauties. There are places that enchant with their magnificence, while others are valued for their simplicity. Nature coexists with human interventions, and modernity with tradition. Discover more about the unique characteristics of the different regions that served as the topic for the books sponsored by Odebrecht.

The books allow readers to travel through cosmopolitan Belo Horizonte, historic Ouro Preto, magical Fernando de Noronha and African Bahia. They also reveal the mysterious period of Arequipa, the natural beauty of the city of São Sebastião, Rio de Janeiro and the advances of the city of Trujillo, Peru, around 1535.

The City of Bahia

Mário Cravo Neto, a world renowned sculptor and photographer, developed this photo essay to pay tribute to the city of Salvador, where he was born in 1947. A Cidade da Bahia was published in 1984, with bilingual text (Portuguese / English).

True snapshots of people, the geography and modern and colonial architecture of the Bahia capital, his portraits seek to integrate the physical and human landscapes. In this way, they promote an in-depth recreation of Bahia’s “beautiful, dramatic and secret” universe.

A Cidade da Bahia includes the notes and comments of the painters Carybé and Mário Cravo (the photographer’s father). Jorge Amado also participates in the work with Canto de Amor à Bahia (“Love Song to Bahia"), the introductory essay that establishes a poetic dialogue with the photos.
