2011

Oracles of Enlightenment Geography: Dom Luis da Cunha and Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville in the Development of Brazilian Cartography

Project: The study investigates the partnership established between Dom Luís da Cunha and the geographer of the King of France, Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon D’Anville, for the production of the map Carte de L’Amérique Méridionale, ordered by Alexandre Gusmão, which was responsible for establishing the limits of land in America, for which there are tree variations: Two manuscripts, dated 1737 and 1742, and a printed one, from 1748,in addition to the successive reprintings, which changed small areas of the map.

Bahia’s Monastery of Saint Benedict

Author: Dom Gregório Paixão
Project: The project tells the story of the first monastery built outside the European continent, in 1581 in Salvador. The book describes the early days of monastery life, the foundation of the Order of Saint Benedict, the Benedictine's arrival to Bahia and their participation in the local social and religious life for a period of 430 years. It also highlights the architecture and construction of the monastery and its rich archive, consisting of paintings, sculptures, real estate, silverware and ceramics. Presentation by Dr. Norberto Odebrecht, Founder of the Odebrecht Organization, and introduction by Head Abbot Dom Emanuel D´Able do Amaral.

Sugar in Turbulent Waters: Trade between Brazil, Portugal and Holland (1595-1618)

Author: Daniel Strum, Economist and Historian.
Project:
The work describes the trade process of Colonial Brazil’s main commodity, sugar, and presents an overview of changes in the production, trade and consumption of the product from the colonization of Brazil to the Dutch invasion in 1630.

Maps and Rivers: the Cartographic Production of Theodoro Sampaio

Author: Ademir Pereira dos Santos, professor at Taubaté University and the School of Fine Arts in São Paulo.
Project:
The study focuses on the life and work of Theodoro Sampaio (1855-1937). The engineer worked on Brazil’s main modernization projects at the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th century, as well as expeditions and river studies focused on Brazilian cartography. Learn more

A Historia do Brazil de Frei Vicente do Salvador – História e Política no Império Português do Século XVII (“The History of Brazil by Monk Vicente do Salvador – History and Politics in the Portuguese Empire of the 17th Century”)

Author: Maria Lêda Oliveira Alves da Silva, researcher at the Center for History and Culture of the School of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon, Portugal.
Project: The research recovers the only historical documents on the work of monk Vicente do Salvador, Franciscan missionary and historian born in the outskirts of Salvador in 1567. This is a reliable edition of the first book on the country’s history, concluded in 1630. Learn more

A Igreja e o Convento de São Francisco da Bahia (“The Church and Convent of São Francisco da Bahia”)

Authors: Team of researchers coordinated by Maria Helena Ochi Flexor, professor at the Federal University of Bahia, and Monk Hugo Fragoso, from Pontifício Ateneo Antoniano in Rome, Italy.
Project: The work recovers the history of the Franciscans in the Bahian religious and cultural world. The religious group's history in the state is confused with that of the Church and Convent São Francisco da Bahia, constructed by the Franciscans over half a century. During this period, different works of art were incorporated into the building.

Escrito na Pedra –Cor, Forma e Movimentos nos Grafismos Rupestres da Bahia (“Written in Stone” – Color, Form and Movement in the Rock Art of Bahia”)

Author: Carlos Alberto Etchvarne, professor and researcher in the Anthropology Department of the Federal University of Bahia.
Project: The book reveals a set of graphic and pictorial representations of Bahian archeological sites rich in rock art. Read more

A Talha Neoclássica na Bahia (“Neoclassic Woodcarving in Bahia”)

Author: Luiz Alberto Freire, professor at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Bahia.
Project:
The study sheds light on the archive of Bahian Neoclassic Woodcarving, which appears in religious icons such as the Sisterhood Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and Nosso Senhor do Bonfim Church. The project reveals the richness of this artistic reform movement which replaced Baroque in part of the Bahian churches in the 19th century. Read more

50 anos de urbanização - Salvador da Bahia no Século XIX (“Fifty Years of Urbanization – Salvador of Bahia during the 19th Century”)

Author: Consuelo Novais Sampaio, professor at the Federal University of Bahia.
Project: The book shows the transformations that have occurred in Salvador with the emergence of the first public transportation, water supply, sanitation and lighting services. The construction of the urban service network in the city during the second half of the 19th century was accomplished primarily through a partnership between the government and private initiative.
